This page contains a variety of information about me, including my thoughts, tastes, hobbies, and professional information. Be advised: Some of it is sarcastic and cynical. In fact, most of it is.

"We call such people Technophiles. They gaze on technology as a lover does on his beloved, seeing it as without blemish and entertaining no apprehension for the future. They are therefore dangerous and are to be approached cautiously."
-Neil Postman, Technopoly

Personal >> My name is Peter Nolen. I live in Tucson, Arizona and have spent the majority of my time working, playing games and complaining.

Interests >> A fan of industrial and electronic music, I have DJed at several clubs here in Tucson. My favorite artists include Haujobb, Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly, Covenant, Forma Tadre, and Snog. In my DJ career I have generally tried to give people the benefit of the doubt and have attempted to play music that isn't the usual normal club hits every week, although in the genres of music that were played at the venues I DJed at, bands like VNV Nation and Assemblage 23 are what would count as normal. I'm not sure I would consider myself successful as a DJ, although it should be noted that every club I've DJed at met an unfortunate demise for reasons outside of the club's control. However, those are stories that I have put far too much detail into in many other places, and in the interest of moving on, I will move on.

Moreso than music, I am an avid videogamer. Both PC Gaming as well as console gaming has taken more time than I would like to imagine and probably time than I even have available. I am a fan of First Person Shooters, RPGs, strategy games, and Massively Multiplayer games. As a X-Com devotee, I have a full page detailing X-Com strategy elsewhere on this site, although the mismanagement of Microprose/Hasbro Interactive/Atari seems to have ended the X-Com series prematurely.

Education >> My primary field of study is Computer Science. I recieved an Associate's Degree from Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona and focused on Computer Networking and Support with some programming classes interspersed. After recieving an AGEC degree (Arizona General Education Curriculum), I transferred to the University of Arizona, where I continued to study Computer Science, primarily programming in Java, C, C#, and various functional programming languages. I also studied computer theory, automata, and some basic Artificial Intelligence introductions. I worked on group projects for most semesters, as well as by myself, on projects including Configurable Networking Protocols, systems for project management on the web, artificial intelligence using TIELT to link to Stratagus (specifically Wargus, an open source port of Warcraft II), and games in Java.

I graduated with a Bachelors of Science from the University of Arizona in Fall 2005.

Professional >> While I did not keep a regular job through all of college, I did work as an independently contracted computer technician throughout my entire college career. This entailed working on both personal and professional machines, primarily in networking setup and support and technical support due to problems with general operation (ie: I did a lot of spyware and virus removal). I also worked as an independant contracter for a company called SPAR Merchandising in retail, which included inventory and setting up new display units. In the last semester at the University of Arizona, I worked as the webperson for Replay Entertainment, a video and music store on the college campus.

I am currently employed as a game developer at Octopi.

Professional Work:

I worked on both client and server of the multiplayer Java WebStart based game PoxNora. This included the implementation of various unit abilities, spells, and other logic on the game server. I also worked on implementation of visual and sound effects on the game client.

I worked on an adaptation of the game Lingo for Worldwinner/GSN/FUN Technologies/Liberty Media. This was released for free for the blackberry Pearl (8100) and World/Curve (8800/8300) phones in Febuary of 2008 on blackberry.mobile.com.

I worked on porting Chess, Backgammon, Shuffleboard, and Spades for the Pocket Party multiplayer cellphone suite of games on various Nokia phones. I also worked on the implementation of parts of the menuing system and various network features.
